Research: target audience

Researching Target audiences

We designed a survey using the website www.surveymonkey.com. We are then planning to distribute it on to different social media websites for get input to help us find out more about the different kinds of audiences for Teen dramas.

For full survey please click the following link:

Who is the target audience for teen drama movies?
I think that the target audience for teen drama movies is aimed at teens aged between13-20 year olds. I think this, because when I think of teens I think of young adults. This shows that they are more interested in teen drama films than people who are age between 30-50. This depicts that the younger the age the more they will be interested in teen dramas. Not all audiences like the same teen  dramas. This is because every audience has a different opinion. For example some audiences might like mainstream films, like Mean Girls and some might like independent films like Beautiful Thing.

Task 1 - What is a Target Audience?

Task 1 - What is a Target Audience?

What is an audience?

An audience is the assembled spectators or listeners at a public event such as a play, film, concert, or meeting.

How do you define your target audience?

A target audience is a particular group at which a product such as a film or advertisement is aimed. One of the first things you do is decide where your target audience is going to be located. Then, you decide whether they are male, female or both. You decide on their average age and on any common interests. You also have to consider their income range, or any if they even have an income range, and what common values they may share.

Why is it useful for a film to have a target audience?

It if useful to have a target audience because it will help you save time and money. It is also important as it your target audience will plane the types of people who will most likely be watching your film, and it was also determine the content shown in your film. For example, a trailer for the film that is aiming to appeal to a teenage market will be different to a trailer appealing to older people.

Which audiences do you think teen dramas appeal to?

I think the primary audience for teen dramas are mainly teenagers ranging from the ages of 13-19, both male and female, in high school or just left high school. I think this because most teen dramas are set in high schools or based around that time, so films like that are already aimed towards the teen martlet. Also, teen dramas can be based around a main character of a male or a female, so it can be directed at both genders. The film can contain things of similar interests both to male and female teen viewers. An example of this could a teen drama film about the first day of high school. Teen dramas can also have a secondary audience where the film can appeal to parents, friends or family etc.

Genres and Sub-Genres

Genre means category of type. this is useful because it helps to organise different films. also it helps audiences to find out what the film might be about depending on the type of genre. For example it the genre was a romance then they will instantly know that the film will be about romance. however, sub-genres focuses on different aspects of a film which helps to appeal to different teenagers. for example two sub-genres like youth drama; focuses on the social dilemmas faced by the main character and high school dramas; focuses on the socialisation of teens and young adults by institutions like school or college. we will also expect the title sequence to be different between the two sub-genres; one will have more titles and the other will have less titles.

What Makes A Good Title Sequence?

Kyle Cooper (Born July 1962) is an American designer of motion picture title sequence.

Cooper went on to study graphic design under Paul Rand at Yale University, receiving his Master of Fine Arts from there in 1988. Early in his professional career, Cooper worked as a creative director at R/GA - an advertising agency with offices in New York and Los Angeles. During this period, Cooper created the title sequence for the 1995 American crime film Seven, a seminal work which received critical acclaim and inspired a number of younger designers.According to Cooper, at the time he made the title sequence for Seven, main title sequences were behind of what was happening in print, music videos and commercials. He wanted to create main titles that were raising the bar creatively.

Cooper is accredited as the man who has single handly revitilised the main title sequence as an art form

He thinks that a title sequence should be able to dubtales sequences seamlessly into the film, as it should help set an expectation and initially get you excited to watch the film.

The film Se7en (1995),  which was known for its important design innovation, their typography was very important as the hanwritten font, reflected the guy who is the serial killer as keeping a journal, developing his own obtacle, scratching emotion into the screens, making it very jumpy to watch. The font is a tool, helping to tell the story, some say a clever pun, which the type also gives an impression of the film.

Some of Cooper's opinion on why he liked certain title sequences:

DEAD ZONE

  • The simple typography was very effective, created a sense of mysteriousness, which the music helped support also, creating an eerie atmosphere, reflecting the genre of the movie.
  • The title sequence helped create an impression of the film, this may have been because he has an interest in film and graphic design, which created a source of another vocation.

To Kill A Mocking Bird

  • Cooper said that in To Kill A Mocking Bird, the title sequence helped incapsulate the main characters obsession, which in his film, it is Scout who is presented as an obsession with the treaure box which we see the titles over a moving image
  • The form of horizontal line, whch the tile doesn't go behind the round objects which are seen in newer film title sequence, this had great effect as it presented the contrast.
  • The type was integrated rather tha being an after thought.

What is 'Story Based' main title sequence?

This is refered to the specific back story but can also be presented as a clear metaphor or poster like pun, do specifically with what the film is about.
You start with the idea and then back into the execution.

Problems Studios May face after an audience test screening:

There might be a problem with the audience not understanding a particular scene, with the audience not notunderstanding a particular aspect and as a low or no budget, they may not be able to shoot another scene.

2 1/2 minutes of th title sequence is Important because ...

It initially becomes another scene to help fill in missing gaps or information that got left out, in some sense a prologue.

An example of an effective title sequence is Dawn of The Dead.Initially it helps advance the plot, sets up the plot and theme

Why does Cooper think titles are so important?
Can help movie, back story, put you where you need in head of the film, infiltrate graphic typographers so there's overlap convergence with typographers and designers tell stories moving to creation of content.
